Guest T120 Posted December 13, 2008 Report Posted December 13, 2008 (edited) Greetings AllA couple of questions as this problem is anoying me:-1 Has any one had a problem with the temp guage moving up and down whilst warming up, but once warmed up it is steady @ normal running 90C. If you have had this problem and rectified it was it caused by a sticking thermostat?2 Where is the Thermostat on the 1900cc PD engine I think its on the right looking at the engine under the fuel filter?3 Has anyone on a not fully warmed up engine taken the revs up high and then the engine goes flat but if you stop kill the engine count to ten start up again and the engine runs normal nice and lively again.Regards T120 Edited December 13, 2008 by T120 Quote
chromedome Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Does this only happen in cold weather? Mine used to fluctuate when it was cold and appears to have been caused by the aux heater cutting in and out. Mine was fixed by replacing the temperature sensor/switch. Quote
seatkid Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 Symptom 3 sounds like turbo control system fault (over or under boost) which trips the ECU into limp home mode. Turning off the engine resets limp home mode. Many many threads about this......try a search.......usually vacuum pipe leak/split/blocked or sticky turbo vane actuator. Quote
f0ster Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 hello mine does sympton 3 quite a lot in cold weather, only when the engine is cold, in my case it is caused by excess oil pressure lifting the valves open slightly, it misses for a few seconds and then picks up and goes again, I read a bulletin about this somewhere, it only does it if I give it too many revs when cold. craig245t Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Hi All I've had both of the problems you mention. My booster heater never worked from the day i bought the car and the temp gauge would (after a long time) start to rise. Just when you think you're about to get some heat in the cabin it drops away again to nearly cold. I always assumed this was because the thermostat had just opened allowing hot water to flow round the whole engine and the pipework that runs to the rear of the car for the booster heater even although it was not firing up. This mixing of the heated water with the unheated water in the rest of the system caused the temp to drop for a short while. Just think about the way a cooling system works....until the thermostat opens water is only flowing round the engine block. When it opens it flows around the whole cooling system. This also happens exactlythe same on my mates Seat Alhambra (same car different badge). I've just fitted a new glow plug to the booster heater and it fired up right away. The engine now warms up much quicker although the gauge will drop slightly half way through warming up which supports my theory of the thermostat opening allowing unheated water to mix. The drop is only slight and the cabin is nice and warm...no more wearing 3 layers to out in the car!The second problem only happens when, as you say, the engine is cold.....if you accelerate from say 40 to 60 in 4th the engine will drop power. This doesn't happen when the engine is warm - I had always assumed this was the engine protecting itself from possible damage but i'm interested in seatkids comments. I'll do some checking if it ever stops raining!! Quote
